Construction industry retains jobs locally throughout crisis

With the Federal Government announcing construction will continue as an essential service under the new national guidelines for COVID-19 prevention, it is business as usual for majority of local contractors in the Toowoomba region – keeping many employed with a positive flow on of economic benefit.

Embarking on the development of Stage 3 in late 2019, The Avenues of Highfields construction continues with local civil contractor Hutchinsons Builder’s full steam ahead on site.

“Our contractors are continuing works on Stage 3 of our development, set to continue through the coming months” project Director Stephen Bowers said.

“Over two kilometres of curbing was laid just last week, while footpaths will be set to come soon. Ashphalting of roads will commence after the Easter break.” Mr Bowers added.

With the construction industry identified as a critical industry being a large scale employee in the local and state-wide economy, it is a welcomed announcement for many contractors and businesses across the region.

“All of our builders have welcomed the announcement, meaning their sites can continue through to completion and others can commence to ensure an on flow of projects being completed by the end of 2020” Mr Bowers said.

Strict new guidelines are being adhered to by builders across the region, ensuring staff and client safety. Including working distance guidelines, capacity restrictions while indoors as well as private inspections only with a maximum number of attendees – all in line with recent regulation announcements.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to continue construction on majority of our projects in the region. This means a number of our staff as well as sub-contractors will continue working throughout this period” local builder Steve Allan of Hotondo Homes said.

“With current builds taking slightly longer to complete – dependant on the individual project, we can ensure a number of the projects we have commenced across Toowoomba will be completed by the end of 2020” Mr Allan added.

With mortgage rates at an all time low, the number of locals embarking on new builds will be known to builders in the coming months as the flow on effects of recent restrictions become known in the marketplace.
