The Avenues Parklands
With a focus on building a community, not just a development, The Avenues of Highfields will incorporate two large park areas for both future residents and locals to enjoy.
The second stage of the development, known as the Parklands Precinct, is currently under construction and will feature the first dedicated park area of The Avenues – Sandy Brennan Park – named in honour of the wife of the developments engineer, Ged Brennan, who sadly passed away last year.
Sandy Brennan Park, to be completed prior to The Avenues first residents arriving in the estate, will be 6800m2 in size and form the centre of the community – where residents and locals can gather for celebrations such as Christmas Carols. The design of the park seeks to provide the community of upwards of 1,350 residents with a space that facilitates a healthy lifestyle through play and access to quality open space.
The design includes the planting of advanced trees, shrubs and plants to further complement the estate, walking and bike paths, a number of large open green spaces for larger group gatherings, a dedicated playground area for younger children and a central pavillion. A key feature that will take pride of place to the eastern entrance of the park will be the Eagle statue currently located at the Highfields Village Shopping Centre.
The Eagle was commissioned by John Stirling on the opening of the Highfields Village Shopping Centre in 2003. After the recent sale of the Shopping Centre, the Stirling family retained ownership of the statue with the intent to relocate it to public parkland. The relocation of the Eagle to Sandy Brennan Park ensures the residents of Highfields may continue to enjoy it long into the future.
Stage 5 will welcome The Avenues second dedicated park area, a space which will be 1.6 hectares – a considerable size. Planned additions for the Stage 5 park include the planting of further advanced trees, shrubs and plants, an off-leash dog park and citrus orchard. Whilst currently a novel idea for the local region, the citrus orchard is envisioned to further create a sense of community, and will be available for all residents of The Avenues to enjoy.
